Military Star (Irish: An Réalt Míleata)
What it is
- A military decoration from Ireland for members of the Permanent Defence Force and the Chaplaincy Service who were killed or mortally wounded in the line of duty as a result of hostile action by an armed enemy.
History
- Originally awarded only for deaths outside Ireland; in 2012 the criteria were changed to include deaths that occurred in Ireland.
Design
- Medal: Bronze, eight-pointed star, 35 mm wide.
- Obverse: Cúchulainn in death.
- Reverse: Blank for engraving the holder’s name, army number, and date/location of death.
- Ribbon: 35 mm wide; purple with black edge stripes. Center white stripe 8 mm wide bisected by a 2 mm orange stripe, bordered by green stripes on both sides.
- Bar: Bronze bar at the top inscribed REMEMBRANCE.
- Designer: Corporal Dan O'Connell, Defence Forces Ceremonial.
Status and precedence
- Status: Currently awarded.
- Precedence: Higher than United Nations Medals; lower than the United Nations Peacekeepers Medal.
