Mohammad Isnaeni (19 April 1919 – 27 October 2002) was an Indonesian politician who played a major role in the country’s party politics and in Parliament. He was one of the longest-serving deputy speakers of the People’s Representative Council, holding the position for four consecutive terms from 1966 to 1982. He led the Indonesian National Party (PNI) for many years and, after the PNI merged into the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI), he served as chairman there as well.

Early life
- Born in Ponorogo, East Java. His father, Khasan Yahya, was a religious teacher from a devout Muslim family, and his mother, Umiyati, came from a pesantren family in Pacitan. He had three brothers.
- Education: completed primary school in Ponorogo in 1932, then Ponorogo Junior High (1933–1936), and a teacher’s school (graduated 1939).
- From 1936, he was active in Indonesian youth groups. He led the Taman Siswa students’ union in Mataram, Jogjakarta, and helped establish the Indonesian Democratic Youth, serving as its chairman in 1947 and 1948.

Youth and early politics
- Isnaeni helped form the National Youth Front, uniting several youth and student organizations.
- He was involved in scouting and worked with fellow activists during the late 1930s and early 1940s.
- He joined Gerindo (the Indonesian People’s Movement) in 1940 and became its branch secretary in Madiun. He knew national figures such as Adam Malik.
- He left Gerindo in 1942 after the Japanese invasion of the Dutch East Indies.

Post-independence political career
- After Indonesia’s independence, Isnaeni joined the Indonesian National Party (PNI) in February 1946 and represented the Madiun branch.
- He became a leading member of the PNI’s Central Executive Council from 1958. In 1960 he was re-elected as a key member, and in 1963 he was elected vice general secretary.
- He clashed with the party leadership under Surachman, which led to a split in 1964 and the formation of the anti-communist Osa-Usep faction (named after Osa Maliki and Usep Hadisubeno).
- After the 30 September 1965 events, the government restructured the PNI, eliminating the Surachman faction. Isnaeni’s Osa-Usep faction became the party’s legitimate leadership.

Later leadership and the PDI
- The Indonesian National Party eventually merged into the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI). Isnaeni served as de facto chairman of the PNI and later as chairman of the PDI.

Personal life
- Isnaeni married Juniati Waltien (Juniati Isnaeni) on 8 March 1942; they met in the Indonesian Nation Scouting in Madiun. They had seven children. Agus Widjojo is his son-in-law.

Death and legacy
- Isnaeni died in Jakarta on 27 October 2002 at the age of 83.
- He received several honors, including the Satya Lencana Perang Kemerdekaan I and II, the Mahaputra Star Adipradana, and the Order of Tudor Vladimirescu.
