What Love Is (song)
"What Love Is" is a short pop song by Estonian singer Uku Suviste. It was Estonia’s entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam, but the contest was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The track, written by Suviste and Sharon Vaughn and produced by Dimitris Kontopoulos and Suviste, lasts three minutes.
At Eesti Laul, Suviste performed with five off-stage backing singers: Kaire Vilgats, Dagmar Oja, Kaarel Orumägi, Raimondo Laikre and Scott Murro. Critics gave mixed reviews. Some praised Suviste’s vocals and the song’s hook, while others called it dated or too theatrical. Wiwibloggs scored it around 4.1/10, ESCXtra ranked it 34th out of 41 with 93 points, and Deban Aderemi gave it 6/10.
With Eurovision 2020 cancelled, several broadcasters held alternative events. Austria’s Der kleine Song Contest placed the song ninth in its third semi-final, while Sweden’s Sveriges 12:a did not place in the top 10. Estonia’s plan to perform in the second semi-final on May 14 was not realized due to the cancellation. Suviste said he intended to return to Eesti Laul in 2021 and was given a semi-final pass, but with a new song. In the Eurovision Song Celebration YouTube broadcast, it was shown that he would have performed second in Semi Final 2, after Greece’s entry and before Austria’s.
