Fabian Wrede-class training ship
The Fabian Wrede class is a group of three training ships used by the Finnish Navy’s Naval Academy for basic seamanship, focusing on navigation in coastal and archipelago waters. The ships—Fabian Wrede (690), Wilhelm Carpelan (691), and Axel von Fersen (692)—were built by Uudenkaupungin työvene Oy and commissioned between 2006 and 2008, replacing the older Heikki class.
Key details:
- Built for training with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure
- One 500 kW CAT C18 diesel engine driving a single propeller, plus a bow thruster and a 38 kVA auxiliary generator
- Displacement about 65 tonnes, length 19.6 m, beam 5.8 m, draft 1.9 m
- Top speed ~10 knots
- Crew and trainees: up to eight seaman students plus four instructors/crew
- Interior designed like larger warships; the engine room is roomy for students and the mess can be used as a classroom
- Names honor nobles and officers from the Swedish rule period in Finland; the names were previously used on Von Fersen class liaison ships
