Midnight Believer
Midnight Believer is a studio album by B.B. King, released in 1978 on ABC Records. It runs 33 minutes and 19 seconds and is a blues album produced by Stewart Levine. In King’s discography, it sits after King Size (1977) and before Take It Home (1979).
The album reached No. 27 on the Billboard Top Soul Albums chart. The song “Never Make A Move Too Soon” reached No. 19 on the Billboard Hot Soul Songs chart.
Musicians on the record include Roland Bautista and The Crusaders, who provided a jazz-funk backing sound. Most songs were written by Will Jennings and Joe Sample (all tracks by Jennings and Sample, except where noted).
Critical reception:
- Mike Freedberg of the Bay State Banner said the music feels modern and polished, yet King remains cool and bluesy after many years.
- Raphael Callaghan of the Liverpool Echo said that backed by the Crusaders, King became an alchemist, turning Will Jennings’ well-crafted songs into heartfelt blues.
- Bill Dahl of AllMusic noted the collaboration works better than expected, blending a slightly funky, contemporary style on tracks like “Never Make Your Move Too Soon” and “When It All Comes Down.”
