Metal Strings
Metal Strings is a 2024 Cambodian music documentary directed by Sokpoly Voeun. It runs 25 minutes and is in Khmer and English. The film follows Reign in Slumber, a Cambodian metal band that includes Nara Tsutra (bass), Alain Ou (drums and founder of Silent6), Ronan Kemp (guitar), and Nel Briones (vocals). It shows their fight to keep their metal music alive amid discrimination and negativity, while trying to educate others about the genre.
Filmed in April 2024 in Phnom Penh, with the shooting taking place at Cloud Bar, the project was completed quickly in post-production by late April. The documentary features music from Reign in Slumber, including Stave Nation Army from their 2019 ST/Demo album and a new original track called Metal Strings from their 2024 Isles of Perdition album. The songs were written by Alain Ou and performed by Nara Tsutra, Nel Briones, Ronan Kemp, Vanntin Hoeurn, and Alain Ou.
Metal Strings premiered on June 12, 2024 at the Cloud Metal Film Fest in Phnom Penh and opened the 13th Cambodia International Film Festival at Chaktomuk Theatre on June 25, 2024. It had its release earlier on May 5, 2024, in Phnom Penh.
