Meretnebty was a queen of ancient Egypt, married to King Sahure of the 5th Dynasty, around 2485 BCE. Her name means “beloved of the Two Ladies,” the goddesses who protect the king. Her parentage is unknown.

In Sahure’s mortuary temple at Abusir, she is shown with Sahure and beside his mother Neferhetepes, both raising their hands in a rare pose that might suggest Neferhetepes was her mother. The temple mentions several potential sons—Horemsaf, Netjerirenre, Khakare, and Nebankhre—but it’s unclear whether they were Meretnebty’s children. Her titles include great of praises, she who sees Horus and Seth, king’s wife, his beloved, and companion of Horus. The couple’s children may have been Princes Ranefer and Netjerirenre, with Ranefer possibly becoming Neferirkare Kakai and Netjerirenre possibly becoming Shepseskare. For a long time her name in the pyramid temple was damaged, read as Neferet-ha-Nebti or Neferetnebti, but later finds show her full name as Meretnebty.
