Menghu Islet
Menghu Islet, also called Tiger Island (Chinese: 猛虎嶼; pinyin: Měnghǔ Yǔ), is a small island off Kinmen. It lies about 3.7 kilometers southwest of Lesser Kinmen, in Lieyu Township, Kinmen County, Fujian Province, Taiwan (Republic of China).
The island covers about 0.025 square kilometers and is part of Lieyu Rural Township. It uses the National Standard Time zone (UTC+8).
History and name
- The island was originally named Hu-tzu Hsü. It received its current name, Menghu Islet, in 1965.
Notable incidents
- 2006: A Chinese fishing ship carrying 198 box turtles was seized near Menghu Islet.
- 2017: A fishing boat with five crew members from Longhai, Zhangzhou, Fujian, was caught near Menghu Islet.
- 2019: Ho Cheng, the new head of the ROC Army Kinmen Defense Command, visited soldiers on Shi Islet and Menghu Islet.
- August 14–15, 2019: Two Coast Guard officers were injured after jumping from their ship onto a Chinese fishing vessel during a patrol around Menghu Islet.
