Charles Guiteau (song)

"Charles Guiteau" is a traditional folk song (Roud 444, Laws E11) about the assassination of U.S. President James A. Garfield by Charles J. Guiteau. The song, based on the older ballad "James A. Rogers," is told from the point of view of the assassin. It was once thought that Guiteau wrote the song himself, perhaps because he wrote the poem "I am Going to the Lordy" on the day of his execution. It should not be confused with the ballad "Mr. Garfield," another Garfield assassination song popularized by Johnny Cash. Bascom Lamar Lunsford recorded both songs in 1949 for the Library of Congress.
