The John Bohlen Lectureship
The John Bohlen Lectureship was a series of talks in Philadelphia about the Christian religion. John Bohlen, who died in Philadelphia on April 26, 1874, left $100,000 to be used for religious and charitable purposes. By a deed of trust dated June 2, 1875, the trustees transferred funds to The Rector, Church Wardens, and Vestrymen of the Church of the Holy Trinity, Philadelphia, with $10,000 set aside to endow the Bohlen Lectureship. The terms allowed a qualified speaker—either a clergyman or a layperson—to deliver two or more lecture sermons in Philadelphia on topics connected with the Christian religion. The lecturer was appointed each year in May by a committee.
