Matt Langwell
Matt Langwell (born May 6, 1986) is an American former professional baseball pitcher. He played in Major League Baseball in 2013 for the Cleveland Indians and Arizona Diamondbacks. In MLB, he went 1-0 with a 5.14 ERA and 12 strikeouts.
Langwell was born in Bryan, Texas, and attended Rice University. He played summer baseball in 2007 with the Wareham Gatemen of the Cape Cod Baseball League. He was drafted by the Indians in the 11th round (351st overall) of the 2008 MLB draft.
He began his pro career with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Low-A) in 2008, then spent 2009 with Lake County, 2010 with Kinston, 2011 with Akron and Columbus, and 2012 with Akron and Columbus. He reached the majors on June 1, 2013, with Cleveland and was optioned to Columbus on June 18. He appeared in five games for the Indians in 2013, going 1-0 with a 5.06 ERA and 6 strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.
On September 1, 2013, Langwell was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks as the player to be named later in the Kubel deal. He pitched in eight games for Arizona, posting a 5.19 ERA with 6 strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings. He was outright to Triple-A Reno on October 3 and released by the Diamondbacks on March 17, 2014.
Langwell signed with the Lancaster Barnstormers of the Atlantic League on April 30, 2014. In 14 starts for Lancaster, he went 5-6 with a 3.42 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 79 innings. He became a free agent after the season.
