Matt Barkley
Matt Barkley is an American former professional football quarterback. He was born on September 8, 1990, in Newport Beach, California. Barkley starred at Mater Dei High School and became one of the top college prospects, choosing to play for USC from 2009 to 2012.
At USC, Barkley delivered a standout college career. In 2011 he threw 39 touchdowns, setting a Pac-12 single-season record and helping USC have a strong season. He stayed for his senior year in 2012, but a shoulder injury cut that season short. Barkley won the Wuerffel Trophy in 2012 for his community service and character. He returned to USC for one more year because he felt it was unfinished business.
Drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL draft, Barkley spent most of his NFL career as a backup with many teams. He played for the Eagles (2013–2014), Cardinals (2015), and Bears (2016). His most notable starting stint came with the Chicago Bears in 2016, where he threw for 1,611 yards, eight touchdowns, and 14 interceptions.
Barkley also spent time with the San Francisco 49ers (2017), the Cardinals again (2017), the Cincinnati Bengals (2018), and the Buffalo Bills (2018–2020). With the Bills, he had a memorable start against the Jets in 2018 and later signed a two-year extension. He then joined the Tennessee Titans (2021) and spent time with the Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons in 2021, followed by another stint with the Bills in 2022. In 2023 he was with the New York Giants before joining the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Off the field, Barkley comes from USC connections—his cousin Robbie Boyer walked on at USC, and his younger siblings Sam and Lainy also attended the school. He is a practicing Christian and has done charitable work in Africa, Nigeria, and Haiti. Barkley married Brittany Langdon in 2013, and they have a son named John, born in 2015.
