Mateo Rosas de Oquendo
Mateo Rosas de Oquendo (c. 1559–1612) was one of the earliest satirists in viceregal Peru. Born in Spain, he went to the Americas and served as Secretary to Viceroy García Hurtado de Mendoza. Notarial records show him taking part in the conquest of Tucumán, where he became Accountant of Royal Finances and founded the city of La Rioja. He also received land in Canchanga and Camiquín, and he probably left Peru for Mexico around 1598. His writings survive mainly in two manuscripts: one in Madrid’s National Library (MS 19381) and another in the Library of the University of Pennsylvania (Ms. Codex 193).
