Manipuri Sahitya Parishad
Manipuri Sahitya Parishad (Meitei: ꯃꯅꯤꯄꯨꯔꯤ ꯁꯥꯍꯤꯇ꯭ꯌ ꯄꯔꯤꯁꯗ, lit. 'Manipuri Literary Council') is a literary council in India that promotes Meitei language and literature at home and abroad. It was founded in 1935 in Imphal and is a nonprofit organization with its headquarters there. It has branches in Imphal, Jiribam, Bishnupur and Thoubal in Manipur, and also active work in Tripura and Meghalaya.
The MSP runs research projects, seminars and conferences, and publishes journals and books. It translates Meitei works into other languages, preserves Meitei folktales and music, and gives annual literary awards and cash prizes to outstanding writers and artists.
In 1977, an agreement led to Meitei being used as a medium for HSLC exams in the Barak Valley, and in 1979 the first Meitei-language HSLC exam saw 1,043 students from Barak Valley participate.
Kamini Kumar was a patron of MSP, Tripura, since 1963. He donated ₹1,000 to MSP, Imphal, which helped fund the Kamini Kumar Memorial Gold Medal—awarded every three years for the best creative writing in Meitei by Manipuris living outside Manipur. On 24 June 2019, Abdul Hamid, a Meitei Pangal from Cachar, Assam, received the Kamini Kumar Gold Medal at the 84th AGM in Imphal.
Beyond literature, MSP also promotes Meitei culture, including Matam Ishei, Nat Sankritan, Raas, stage drama, Goura Leela, painting, Thang-Ta, Lairik Thiba and Pung. It supports Meitei classical dance and Sankirtana, and has conferred the Sangeet Ratna title on Chengtham Subal (1976) and Haobam Basna (1984) for their contributions.
