The 1898 Western Conference football season was the third season of football for the Western Conference schools (later the Big Ten) and part of the 1898 college football season. Michigan won the conference with a perfect 10–0 record, shutting out six opponents and outscoring all opponents 205–26. The championship came in a game against Amos Alonzo Stagg’s Chicago Maroons, which Michigan won 12–11; this game inspired Louis Elbel to write Michigan’s fight song, “The Victors.” Wisconsin, coached by Philip King, finished 9–1 and third after losing to Chicago. Only 10 conference games were played in 1898. There were no bowl games that year.
