Mango (Tonga)
Mango is a small island in Tonga, located about 9 kilometers southeast of the bigger island of Nomuka. It is part of the Nomuka group in the southern Ha’apai island chain. In 2021, 36 people lived there.
In 2022, the Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha’apai eruption and tsunami caused severe damage to Mango. A distress call was detected, and images showed that the village was wiped out and all homes were destroyed; a 65-year-old man was killed. The island was evacuated, and residents were taken to Tongatapu by the Tongan Maritime Force. After about a year living in a church hall in Nukuʻalofa, they were eventually resettled on the island of ʻEua.
