Mafia Island is a Tanzanian island and the largest piece of the Mafia Archipelago. It sits off the east coast in the southern Pwani Region and is not part of Zanzibar. The main town is Kilindoni, and the island’s people number around 66,000 (2022). The economy relies on fishing, subsistence farming, and trade via Kilindoni. The island also attracts divers, birdwatchers, and visitors looking for a relaxing getaway.

Geography
Mafia Island lies in the Sea of Zanj, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the Rufiji River delta. The Mafia Channel separates the delta from the island. Kilindoni is on the west coast; Chole Bay on the east is a protected deep-water harbor with many small islets and beaches. The northern tip is Ras Mkumbi, a coral bluff that rises to about 4.5 meters (15 feet) above sea level and has a lighthouse. The Mafia Archipelago contains nine islands in total, with Juani Island and Jibondo Island being the two major ones. The island covers about 435 square kilometers (168 square miles) in total, is about 49 km long and 17 km wide, and its highest point is Ndogani at 53 meters (174 feet).

Climate
Mafia has a tropical climate (Aw). Kilindoni’s average temperature is around 26.7°C (80°F). The area gets about 1,705 mm of rain each year, with a wetter season from March to May and a dry period from July to October. Average highs are typically around 31°C (88°F) in the warmest months, with daily temperatures usually between about 25°C and 29°C.

Ecology
The island hosts mangrove swamps, coastal forests, scrublands, and grasslands. A large coastal area around Chole Bay and nearby waters has been designated as an Important Bird Area because it supports species such as western reef egret, Terek sandpiper, and crab plover. Mafia is also known for fruitbats of the genus Pteropus.

History
Mafia Island has been known since at least the 8th century and played a role in historic trade between East Africa and parts of Asia. It was a stop for Arab traders. In the late 19th century, Germany took control and built many buildings still seen on Chole. Britain later used the island as a base during World War I. The name “Mafia” likely comes from the Arabic morfiyeh (meaning “group” or “archipelago”) or from Swahili words meaning “a healthy dwelling-place.” In 1995, WWF helped establish Tanzania’s first Marine Park at Mafia, and the area has since benefited from conservation and community plans. In 2016, divers found remains of a long wall about 4 km off Mafia, suggesting further underwater archaeology.

Transport
Mafia Airport offers flights from Dar es Salaam, operated by Auric Air, Tropical Air, and Coastal Aviation. Boats between Nyamisati on the mainland and Kilindoni operate in the late afternoon, typically around 16:00, taking about 4.5 hours; tickets are about 16,000 Tanzanian shillings one-way.
