List of goalscoring NHL goaltenders
Seventeen NHL goaltenders have scored 20 goals in league play. Of these, 12 came from the goalie shooting the puck into an empty net, and 8 were goals credited to the goalie in other situations (often involving an own goal or unusual play).
Goaltenders have occasionally joined the offense since hockey began, but modern rules and equipment make it very rare. Since 1966-67, goalies aren’t allowed to cross the center red line to touch the puck, so they usually shoot from their side when the net is empty. Shooting from far away and risk of giving up the puck also limits attempts.
Key milestones
- First goalie credited with a goal: Billy Smith, 1979, after an opponent’s own goal.
- First goalie to score by shooting: Ron Hextall, 1987, into an empty net.
- Most goals by a goalie: Martin Brodeur, three (two in the regular season and one in the playoffs).
- Most recent goalie goal (as of March 1, 2025): Ilya Sorokin, New York Islanders.
- 2024–25 marked a rare season with more than one goalie scoring a goal, including Filip Gustavsson.
- Nedeljkovic is the only goalie credited with goals in the NHL, AHL, and ECHL.
Notes
- Goals by shooting typically come with an empty net; goals that aren’t shot are usually own-goal plays.
- A goalie’s goal is rare and often occurs when the team is leading and the other goalie is pulled for an extra attacker.
