2010 MTV Video Music Awards
The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards were held on September 12, 2010, at Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. Chelsea Handler hosted the show, becoming the first woman to host the VMAs in 16 years.
Lady Gaga led the night with 13 nominations and won eight awards, including Video of the Year for Bad Romance and Best Collaboration for Telephone. She also announced her upcoming album Born This Way while accepting the Video of the Year award. Gaga’s meat dress sparked a lot of controversy and backlash from PETA, though she and her supporters defended the outfit as a statement and expression.
The show drew about 11.4 million viewers, the largest VMAs audience since 2002. Deadmau5 was the house artist, with several performances throughout the night. Will.i.am faced online criticism for his dark makeup look, which he defended as artistic expression on Twitter.
Overall, Gaga was the big winner, with a night full of memorable moments and fashion discussions that kept people talking long after the show ended.
