Speerschneidera

Speerschneidera is a one-species genus of lichen-forming fungi in the Leprocaulaceae family. The only species is Speerschneidera euploca, a crustose lichen found in the southern United States and Mexico.

The genus was defined by Italian botanist Vittore Trevisan in 1861, with S. euploca as the type species. The species was first described in 1858 by Edward Tuckerman as Physcia euploca. The name Speerschneidera honors Julius Ferdinand Speerschneider (1825–1903), a German doctor and naturalist who curated a natural history collection that later became Rudolstadt’s Natural History Museum.
