Look Before You Sleep
Look Before You Sleep is the eighth episode of the first season of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. It aired on December 3, 2010. In the episode, Applejack and Rarity clash over how to prune for an upcoming rainstorm, so Twilight Sparkle invites them to stay at her Golden Oak Library for a slumber party.
The three friends try to enjoy the night with ghost stories, s’mores, and games, but Applejack and Rarity keep arguing. A pillow fight blows up, and Twilight tries to end the party and send everyone to bed. Then a storm hits: a lightning-struck tree starts to fall toward a neighboring house. Applejack tries to stop it with her lasso but ends up pulling the tree through Twilight’s window.
Realizing they must work together, Applejack apologizes to Rarity and the two friends join with Twilight to clear the tree from the room. They finish the night with a game of Twenty Questions, and Twilight declares the slumber party a success.
Reception: Critics praised the episode as standout and well-paced, noting its bottle-episode feel and emphasis on friends with different personalities learning to cooperate. Some analyses discuss themes of gender and social roles, and how Twilight’s rulebook both unites and constrains the group. The episode is included on the Season 1 DVD set released by Shout Factory on December 4, 2012.
