Rural municipalities (RMs) are local governments in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. They are created by the Minister of Municipal Relations under The Municipalities Act.
Key facts
- There are 296 rural municipalities, mostly in the central and southern parts of the province.
- In the 2016 Census, these RMs had a combined population of 176,535, averaging about 596 people per RM.
Size and examples
- RM sizes vary a lot. For example, Hillsborough RM covers about 445.25 km2, while Hudson Bay RM covers about 12,462.61 km2.
Largest and smallest
- The largest RM by population is Corman Park No. 344, with 8,568 people.
- The smallest RM is Glen McPherson No. 46, with 72 people.
Northern Saskatchewan
- The northern half of the province is not part of any RM; it is administered by the Northern Saskatchewan Administration District.
Subdivisions
- RMs include organized hamlets, special service areas, other hamlets, and unincorporated localities.
