Skelly (Halloween decoration)

Skelly is a 12-foot-tall skeleton lawn decoration made by Home Depot for Halloween. It’s officially listed as the 12-Foot Giant-Sized Skeleton and is nicknamed “Skelly” by shoppers. It’s built from metal pipes and has LED eyes. Home Depot also makes a 7-foot skeletal dog called Skelly’s Dog to go with it.

The idea came from Home Depot’s research and development team, led by Lance Allen and Rachel Little. After testing hundreds of skeleton designs, they decided to create a 12-foot version. They wanted something bigger than 10 feet, but still affordable and easy to transport and set up. When they first saw a prototype in a conference room, they were impressed.

Skelly went on sale in 2020 and continued through 2023, when it sold out for Halloween. In 2024, Home Depot released an updated Skelly with customizable glowing LED eyes for use beyond Halloween. They also issued a limited-edition “servo Skelly” that moves with motors.

Skelly’s popularity sparked interest in other large Halloween decorations, though none sold as well. It remains very popular and often sells out. People also display Skelly year‑round, sometimes dressing it for Christmas by adding a Santa suit. An online fan base has formed, including a Facebook group called the 12 Foot Skeleton Owners Group. Skelly went viral on social media during the COVID-19 pandemic, with people dressing it in costumes or placing it in different settings. In 2023, some owners dressed it as Taylor Swift for the Eras Tour. The hashtag #12footskeleton had tens of millions of views on TikTok. Skelly has become a meme and a subject of parody articles.

Because some people display Skelly year‑round, some homeowner associations have fined residents for off‑season displays. There is also a resale market for used Skellies.
