List of public art on the Victoria Embankment
Victoria Embankment is a road and riverside walkway on the north side of the River Thames in London. It sits on land reclaimed in the late 1800s during Joseph Bazalgette’s sewer projects. In 1864, the Victoria Embankment Gardens were created along the embankment. The four gardens run from northeast to southwest: Temple Gardens, the Main Garden, the Whitehall Garden, and the Ministry of Defence section (the last laid out between 1939 and 1959). Each garden has its own commemorative sculptures, and there are additional memorials along the river walk and the road. The Embankment is one of London’s main places for public memorials. Memorials include figures such as Richard D’Oyly Carte and other Savoy Hotel chairmen and managing directors up to 1989.
