Pomona Waste To Energy Power Station
Pomona Waste To Energy Power Station, also known as the Harare Solid Waste Plant, is a 22 MB solid-waste-fired power plant being built near the Pomona Landfill in North Harare, Zimbabwe. Dutch company Geogenix BV is financing, building, and will operate the plant through its Zimbabwean subsidiary Geo Pomona Waste Management Private Limited for 30 years; after that, ownership reverts to the Harare City Council. A 30-year power purchase agreement with Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) covers the electricity generated.
The plant will use about 1,000 tonnes of waste per day (57% combustible) from Harare, turning the waste into heat to produce steam and drive generators that generate electricity for the national grid. Harare will charge around US$40 per tonne of waste delivered. Construction costs are about €304 million (US$344 million), with completion expected in late 2022 or early 2023. Once operational, the facility is expected to add 22 MW to the grid, help reduce waste disposal problems in the city, and create more than 300 jobs during its 30-year life.
