List of prime ministers of Belgium
List of prime ministers of Belgium (short version)
The prime minister of Belgium is the head of the federal government. In the past, the king often led the government, but after World War I the role of the prime minister became the main political leadership. Over time, the king’s political influence has faded while the prime minister’s importance has grown. The modern office is associated with leaders who guide the country through Parliament and coalitions, a in which Léon Delacroix is an early example after World War I.
Prime ministers have come from many political parties, including Independent, Catholic Party, Liberal Party, Christian Social Party, Christian Democratic and Flemish, Reformist Movement, Belgian Labour Party, Belgian Socialist Party, Socialist Party, and New Flemish Alliance.
The length of time a prime minister stays in office varies a lot, from a few days to almost a year, reflecting Belgium’s sometimes fragile coalition governments.
