American School of Recife

The American School of Recife (Escola Americana do Recife, EAR) is a private, non-profit, coeducational day school in Recife, Brazil. Founded in 1957, it serves Nursery through 12th grade for students of many nationalities. Classes are taught in English, with Portuguese language study starting in Pre-K. The school has no religious affiliation and follows a U.S.-style, college-preparatory program, including Advanced Placement courses and a wide range of electives such as Spanish, French, computer science, art, music, and photography. Support is available for language-learning difficulties and mild learning disabilities. The school year has two semesters: August through December and February through June. The school day runs from 7:50 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., with extracurricular activities beginning around 5:00 p.m.

Accreditation and affiliations: Cognia (U.S.), Pernambuco State Ministry of Education, and Recife Municipal Education Council (Brazil). It is a member of the Association of American Schools in Brazil (AASB), the Association of American Schools in South America (AASSA), and the Association for the Advancement of International Education (AAIE).

Campus and facilities: The school sits on about 8.5 acres in a residential area, with separate buildings for pre-K to 12. It has 48 classrooms, science labs, a biology lab, a music room, a small theater, a technology lab, two libraries, two dining areas, an infirmary, administrative offices, four playgrounds, three multi-sport covered courts, a tennis court, a soccer field, and two beach volleyball courts.

Governance and status: A seven-member Board of Directors elected by the parents of enrolled students. The school is not incorporated in the United States and is registered in Pernambuco as a civil society with tax-exempt status in Brazil.
