Matt Margenthaler
Matt Margenthaler is the head coach of the Minnesota State Mavericks men’s basketball team in the NSIC. He played college basketball at Iowa State (1986–1988), Parkland College (1988–1989), and Western Illinois (1989–1991). After college, he worked in the Louisville athletic department before beginning his coaching career at St. Louis Community College–Florissant Valley (1993–1994), where he was named the NJCAA Region 16 Coach of the Year. He then served as an assistant for SIU Edwardsville’s women’s team (1994–1996) and as an assistant at South Dakota State (1996–2001) before becoming Minnesota State’s head coach in 2001.
Margenthaler has led Minnesota State to a Division II national championship in 2024, defeating Nova Southeastern 88–85. He earned his 500th win on January 17, 2024, with a 90–88 victory over Minnesota State Moorhead. His teams have won five NSIC regular-season titles (2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2024), three NSIC tournament titles (2013, 2014, 2024), and NSIC South Division titles (2013, 2014, 2019). They also won NCC regular-season titles in 2006, 2007, and 2008. Individually, Margenthaler was the NABC Division II Coach of the Year in 2024, and has earned NCC Coach of the Year (2006, 2007, 2008) and NSIC Coach of the Year (2010, 2011, 2014, 2015).
His family has deep basketball roots: his father, Jack Margenthaler, was head coach at Western Illinois and SIU Edwardsville, and his younger brother Ty Margenthaler is a women's college basketball coach who has led Southeast Missouri State.
