Characters in the Epic of Gilgamesh

This is a short guide to the people and beings in the Epic of Gilgamesh, an ancient Mesopotamian poem. The standard version most people use was likely put together by Sîn-lēqi-unninni in the Kassite period. Earlier Old Babylonian versions exist, and some copies show Hittite or Hurrian influences. Modern translations generally follow the Sîn-lēqi-unninni edition.

Main characters
The list below follows the order in which characters appear in the Standard Babylonian version.

Deities
A separate, alphabetized list covers the gods and other divine beings named in the epic.

Other related works
Besides the epic itself, there are six standalone Sumerian poems about Gilgamesh:
- Gilgamesh, Enkidu, and the Netherworld
- Gilgamesh and Humbaba (two versions, A and B)
- Gilgamesh and the Bull of Heaven
- Gilgamesh and Akka
- Death of Gilgamesh

A related text may be the Tale of Gudam, though Gilgamesh does not appear there. Elements from these works influenced the epic, while some were left out. The characters from these related works are listed alphabetically.
