Lycoming IO-580
The Lycoming IO-580 is a six‑cylinder, horizontally opposed aircraft engine made by Lycoming Engines. It has three cylinders on each side and uses fuel injection (there is no carbureted O‑580 version). It competes with the Continental IO‑550.
The engine was originally developed for the Cessna 206 Stationair, but production delays due to cylinder problems led Cessna to use the older IO‑540 instead. The IO‑580 family delivers about 300–315 horsepower and has a displacement of 583 cubic inches (9.554 liters). Fuel is injected at each cylinder through air‑bled nozzles, in proportion to airflow. The cylinders have air‑cooled aluminum heads with a fully machined combustion chamber.
The IO‑580 was first type certified on August 12, 1997 under FAR 33. It can be installed in either tractor (nose‑mounted) or pusher (rear‑mounted) configurations.
