List of Pokémon Trading Card Game sets
The Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) started in Japan in 1996. Since then, thousands of cards have been released in hundreds of sets. By late 2025 there were about 126 English sets and 91 Japanese sets, including special and promo releases. The game has shipped billions of cards worldwide and has grown in many generations of rules and cards.
Two big eras shaped the early years. Wizards of the Coast published the first English sets. After Nintendo’s (The Pokémon Company International) involvement grew, newer sets came out under different names and with new game mechanics.
A quick look at the early English sets:
- Base Set (the first big English expansion) and Jungle followed, bringing many of the original Pokémon to English players. Jungle introduced holo and non-holo rares.
- Fossil and Team Rocket added more Pokémon and new ideas, including Dark Pokémon.
- Gym Heroes and Gym Challenge focused on Gym Leaders and introduced Stadium cards, which stay in play until a new Stadium card comes.
- Neo Genesis started the second generation (Johto) and added new card designs and two new types.
- Neo Discovery and Neo Revelation expanded Johto further and introduced the idea of “Shining” Pokémon, very powerful basics that were limited to one of each kind per deck.
- Neo Destiny finished the Johto era and carried the game into newer ideas.
Starting with the Diamond & Pearl era (around 2007), the game began big changes:
- The Diamond & Pearl base set introduced a new level-up mechanic with LV.X cards and changed some type rules.
- Several DP sub-sets added new Pokémon from the fourth generation (Sinnoh), new “Item” held cards, and more LV.X cards.
- The Platinum line added new mechanics and the Lost Zone, a second discard-like area, and introduced new kinds of powerful cards.
- HeartGold & SoulSilver brought Prime cards (strong but simple to use) and Legends that combine two Pokémon into one card.
- The HeartGold & SoulSilver era and the Lost Link mini-sets led into later releases, while promos and special sets kept expanding the collection.
In the modern era, new generations of Pokémon games kept driving the card lines:
- Black & White sets introduced online play features and new themes.
- XY sets aligned with the X and Y video games, followed by Sun & Moon sets with new gameplay ideas.
- Sword & Shield era brought changes to packaging, new card types, and a steady release of new sets.
- Scarlet & Violet launched the latest major wave, introducing card-price changes, a different booster-pack structure, and new ways to collect and play.
Promotions, prereleases, and special cards have always been part of the game:
- Prerelease events let players try upcoming sets, and a few rare prerelease cards became highly sought after.
- Promotional cards, often marked with a special PROMO symbol, have appeared in league events, magazines, and special releases. Some famous promos include Birthday Pikachu and various “box toppers” or oversized cards.
Today the Pokémon TCG continues to release new sets to mirror the newest Pokémon games and regions. It remains popular worldwide, with a large catalog of cards, including shiny and special editions, and frequent special releases that keep collecting and playing fresh and exciting.
If you want, I can summarize specific eras, sets, or mechanics in simpler terms or focus on a particular generation.
