Iwata Asks is a set of interviews with Nintendo’s late president Satoru Iwata, conducted from 2006 to 2015. In these talks, Iwata chats with colleagues about Nintendo’s games, hardware, and other company details. The conversations share behind-the-scenes history of how games and hardware were made and give a sense of the creators’ thinking at the time. They also show the friendly culture at Nintendo, with jokes and laughter common in the exchanges. Many readers see Iwata Asks as a valuable source of information about how Nintendo develops its products. Time magazine’s Matt Peckham called it “a remarkable series” and “a Nintendo fan’s dream.” Some material from Iwata Asks was collected in the book Ask Iwata: Words of Wisdom from Satoru Iwata, published by Hobonichi in 2019 in Japan, with an English edition released in 2021. A similar interview series, Ask the Developer, started in 2021. It features Nintendo developers sharing their thoughts in their own words about creating Nintendo products and the specific points they focus on. The first entry appeared on July 1, 2021, for the Switch game Game Builder Garage.
