Hot C&W Sides is Billboard’s country chart in the United States. In 1960, five different songs reached number one.

The year started with Marty Robbins’ El Paso, which stayed on top for five weeks and also topped the Hot 100 for two weeks. In early February, Jim Reeves began a 14-week run at number one with He’ll Have to Go, which was immediately followed by Hank Locklin’s Please Help Me, I’m Falling, another 14 weeks at number one. Both songs were produced by Chet Atkins, a key figure in the Nashville Sound that gave country music a smoother, more widely appealing production.

Cowboy Copas then spent 12 weeks at number one with Alabam, his first chart-topper and, sadly, his only one; he died in 1963. During these long runs, other songs reached number two, including Ray Price’s One More Time, which spent eight weeks in second place behind Locklin’s hit.

The final country number one of 1960 was Ferlin Husky’s Wings of a Dove; Husky would continue to chart well but would not top the chart again. Marty Robbins would go on to more number ones, including El Paso City in 1976, a sequel to El Paso.

Notes: The last issue of 1960 was dated December 31; the next issue appeared January 9, 1961.
