Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project is a 2023 documentary by Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson about American poet Nikki Giovanni. The film follows her life and work through the civil rights era, the Black Arts Movement, and today’s Black Lives Matter movement. Taraji P. Henson narrates.
The documentary premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 20, 2023. It had a limited release on November 3, 2023, and aired on HBO on January 8, 2024. It won the Grand Jury Prize for U.S. Documentary at Sundance and was shown at the True/False Film Festival in 2023. HBO Documentary Films acquired U.S. and Canada rights in August 2023.
The film runs 102 minutes and is in English. Critics praised it, with 97% of reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic score of 73/100. It was Oscar short-listed and won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Exceptional Merit In Documentary Filmmaking in 2024.
