Lindsay Urwin
Lindsay Goodall Urwin, born on 13 March 1956, is an Australian Anglican bishop. He served as the Bishop of Horsham in southern England from 1993 to 2009, and he helped organise the annual Caister Conference. He then became the administrator of the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham from 2009 to 2015. In April 2015, he was named vicar of Christ Church Brunswick in Melbourne, Australia, and he began there in September 2015. He retired in 2023 and returned to the United Kingdom.
Urwin studied at Camberwell Grammar School in Melbourne, then at Trinity College Theological School and Ripon College Cuddesdon in England. He was ordained deacon in 1980 and priest in 1981, and consecrated a bishop in 1993 by George Carey. He joined the Oratory of the Good Shepherd in 1991 and led it in the UK from 1996 to 2005. His sister Kate Prowd is also a bishop in Melbourne, and their brother Michael Urwin has been a school headmaster and the Melbourne diocese registrar. He is an honorary assistant bishop in the Diocese of Southwark and has permission to officiate in the Diocese of Chichester.
Urwin is known for his work with youth ministry, his stance against homophobia, and his view that the church should make room for conservative voices, including those who oppose the ordination of women. He has spoken about the importance of celibacy for some clergy and has encouraged single clergy to form supportive households. He has also appeared on Ali G and Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares.
