Ghana COVID-19 Private Sector Fund
Ghana's COVID-19 Private Sector Fund is an effort by the Government of Ghana to fight the coronavirus. It was started by ten businesspeople who aimed to raise 100,000 Ghana cedis to support the government's COVID-19 response and help people affected by the pandemic economically and socially. The fund’s initial goal included helping Kayayei (head porters) with food and accommodation during the lockdown to reduce the spread of the virus. About 8,000 Kayayei were assisted (6,000 in Accra and 2,000 in Kumasi). The initiative ran from 1 to 12 April 2020, with extensions afterward. Julie Essiam of the Ghana Revenue Authority led the project. The fund also supported the construction of the Ghana Infectious Disease Centre, since the country did not have such a facility at the time. On 21 August, the fund received 6.8 million Ghana cedis from the Ghana COVID-19 National Trust Fund to contribute to building the centre.
