Lazarus Churchyard

Lazarus Churchyard is a British comic book character created in 1991 by writer Warren Ellis and artist Matt Brooker (a.k.a. D'Israeli). The stories blend futuristic science fiction with dark, decadent themes. He first appeared in Blast! magazine and later ran in the Judge Dredd Megazine. While some stories were drawn by others, Ellis says the D'Israeli artwork is the definitive version.

In the story, Lazarus Churchyard undergoes a plasborging experiment in which about 80% of his body is replaced with intelligent, evolving plastic. This plastic can react in 0.132 seconds to any danger and adapt by growing weapons like spikes or blades. It also neutralizes toxins, making him effectively immortal. The adventures take place about 400 years after the experiment.

The world is a dystopia where the United Kingdom is controlled by the Isis-Elek corporation and renamed Savoy, while large parts of the globe are ruined by germ warfare.

Publication history: Tundra Press released a three-issue Lazarus Churchyard comic in 1992. It was collected as Lazarus Churchyard: The Final Cut (Atomeka Press) in 1992 and later reissued by Image Comics in 2001. Some bands, like Lucy's Drowning and Meathook Seed, took their names from elements of the story.
