Lake of Souls
Lake of Souls is a 2024 science fiction short story by Ann Leckie, included in the collection Lake of Souls. The story follows a stranded human anthropologist who wanders an alien planet and meets a native on a quest about souls, names, and what it means to be a person. The piece was a finalist for the 2025 Hugo Award for Best Novelette. Critics praised it: Gary K. Wolfe of Locus called it surprisingly moving, and Natalie Zutter of Reactor noted that readers who dislike humans trying to claim all the attention may relate more to the lobster-dogs than to the human anthropologist.
