Erdan Island
Erdan Island, also called Èrdǎn Dǎo in Chinese, is a small island in Lieyu Township, Kinmen County, Taiwan. It covers about 0.28 square kilometers (0.11 square miles) and sits roughly 12 kilometers from Greater Kinmen Island and 4 kilometers from Xiamen Island. Mt. Jiaoshi on the island rises about 55 meters above sea level. Dadan Island lies about 800 meters away to the east.
History and notable events
- In 1942, more than 50 anti-Japanese dissidents were brought to Erdan and executed.
- In 1957, reports stated that Chinese Communists shelled Dadan and Erdan.
- On September 6, 2011, President Ma Ying-jeou visited troops stationed on Erdan.
- In 2013, Kinmen County designated Erdan as a battlefield culture landscape.
- The island was handed over from the Kinmen Defense Command to the county government on July 1, 2014.
- In 2022, Erdan soldiers confronted a Chinese drone near their post, including a stone-throwing incident and later firing at the drone.
- In 2023, a Taiwan soldier on Erdan went missing during roll call, believed to have deserted to China.
