Kydoniai Division
Kydoniai Division was a Greek infantry division of the Hellenic Army, formed in January 1920 during the Asia Minor Campaign. It took its core from the independent 31st Infantry Regiment at Lake Doiran, the 32nd Infantry Regiment from Ioannina, and the Smyrna Guard Regiment (renumbered as the 33rd Infantry Regiment). The division was named after Ayvali (Kydoniai) and, after its formation was completed in February, it became part of the Smyrna Army Corps. Its first and only commander was Colonel Alexandros Othonaios.
In September 1920, most of the division was sent back to Greece to guard the November 1920 elections. The units that stayed behind were merged with the Crete Division, which was also brought to Asia Minor at the same time. After the elections, the division returned to Asia Minor but was abolished: its headquarters were merged with the Crete Division, while the 31st and 32nd Regiments were disbanded and merged into the 33rd Regiment, which joined the Crete Division. The Crete Division was later renamed the 5th Infantry Division.
