Kwong Wah Yit Poh is Malaysia’s oldest Chinese-language daily newspaper and the oldest still published in Southeast Asia. It was founded in Penang in December 1910 by Sun Yat-sen as part of the Tongmenghui revolutionary movement.

The newspaper’s first issue appeared in December 1910, and its early offices were at 120 Armenian Street in Penang. That building is now Sun Yat-sen Museum Penang.

Kwong Wah Yit Poh started to rival Penang Sin Poe, Penang’s other Chinese newspaper, to support the revolutionary cause and connect with overseas Chinese.

In 1936, Kwong Wah Yit Poh bought Penang Sin Poe, which had been Penang’s first Chinese newspaper (established 1895). Sin Poe continued publishing until 1941, when World War II interrupted operations; it did not resume until 1946.

Cheong Yoke Choy, a prominent Kuomintang supporter, owned shares in Kwong Wah Yit Poh.

Today, Kwong Wah Yit Poh remains a daily newspaper serving Chinese readers in Malaysia.
