Ellen Simpson is an American writer and editor known for her work on the web series Carmilla. She has also published several novels with Ylva Publishing. Simpson is a lesbian.

In 2014, she helped develop Carmilla with Jordan Hall for Smoke Bomb Entertainment. The series launched on Vervegirl’s YouTube channel (now called KindaTV) on August 19, 2014. U by Kotex was the executive producer.

Carmilla is set at Silas University in Styria, Austria and is told through Laura’s video journals as a first-year student. Seasons 1 and 2 each have 36 episodes, 3 to 7 minutes long. A 12-episode prequel mini-season called “season zero” was announced after Season 2 ended.

In 2016, Carmilla won a Canadian Screen Award and a Banff World Media Festival Rockie Award for Branded Content.

Simpson is currently a PhD student in Information Science at the University of Colorado Boulder.
