Krzysztof Mieszkowski
Krzysztof Mieszkowski (born 19 May 1956 in Głogów) is a Polish theatre critic, journalist and politician. He founded and edits Notatnik Teatralny, a quarterly about theatre, and was the director of the Wrocław Polish Theatre from 2006 to 2016. He has served as a member of the Polish Sejm (parliament) in the 8th, 9th and 10th terms.
Early life and career
- He studied cultural studies at the University of Wrocław but did not finish.
- In the 1970s he participated in the off-theatre movement and began writing theatre criticism, debuting in the late 1970s.
- He contributed to many magazines and worked with Radio Wrocław and various TV and press outlets.
- He was involved with Solidarity’s Culture Council in Lower Silesia.
Notatnik Teatralny and theatre work
- In 1991 he founded Notatnik Teatralny, a theatre magazine that featured articles and notes about Polish theatre.
- The magazine won local awards, including the President of Wrocław Award (1993) and the City of Wrocław Award (2001).
- He created Szkice o teatrze for TVP1 and hosted Magazyn teatralny on TVP2. He led cultural programming at Radio Wrocław and worked with TVP Wrocław and TVP Polonia.
- As director of the Wrocław Polish Theatre (2006–2016), he oversaw numerous premieres and organized theatre debates.
Politics
- In 2015 he was elected to the Sejm as part of the Nowoczesna party, which is part of the Civic Coalition; he later served as vice-chairman of the Culture and Media Committee.
- In January 2018 he briefly left the Nowoczesna parliamentary club during a vote but rejoined on February 2, 2018.
- He ran in the 2019 European Parliament elections but was not elected. He was re-elected to the Sejm in 2019 with 13,814 votes.
- He was not elected to the Sejm in 2023. On 26 June 2024 he took a Sejm seat for the 10th term, replacing Bogdan Zdrojewski who moved to the European Parliament.
