King of the Ring (1991)
The 1991 King of the Ring was the sixth King of the Ring tournament from the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE). It happened on September 7, 1991, at the Providence Civic Center in Providence, Rhode Island. It was a non-televised house show with about 2,400 fans in attendance.
Bret Hart won the tournament. There was one other match on the night, in which The Beverly Brothers defeated The Bushwhackers in a tag team bout.
The King of the Ring is a single-elimination tournament that crowns the "King of the Ring." It began in 1985, was held annually through 1989, paused in 1990, and returned in 1991. The 1991 event was the sixth edition and, like previous years, was not shown on TV.
From 1993, the King of the Ring became a pay-per-view event each year, continuing until 2002, when the WWF became WWE. After 2002, the tournament appeared irregularly, sometimes on Raw and SmackDown or other events. Bret Hart would later become the only wrestler to win King of the Ring twice (1991 and 1993).
