KZMX-FM
KZMX-FM is a Hot Springs, South Dakota radio station on 96.3 FM, branded as “96 The Mix.” It plays classic rock and is owned by Mt. Rushmore Broadcasting, Inc. Its sister stations are KZMX (AM) and KFCR.
Brief history
- Began May 7, 1981 as KOBH-FM on 96.7 MHz; changed to KZMX-FM on June 20, 1986.
- The original KOBH call letters were used by an earlier Black Hills station that became KOTA in Rapid City.
- The station appears to have aired an oldies format in the mid-1990s.
- In June 2022, KZMX-FM moved from 96.7 FM to 96.3 FM to make room for KRCF 96.7 in Lead, South Dakota.
Regulatory and staffing notes
- May 18, 2012: The FCC fined KZMX-FM and its sister station $21,500 for violations including operating without staff on site and using an incorrect antenna.
- Early 2015: Sought extension of special temporary authority due to staffing problems after resignations.
- Late 2016: Returned to the air from its licensed facility but at much lower power than the licensed level, continuing a classic rock format.
