KMSC (FM)
KMSC 92.9 FM is a college radio station at Morningside University in Sioux City, Iowa. It broadcasts an alternative format under the branding Fusion 93. The station is run mainly by students; anyone at Morningside can host a show, and some classes require on-air participation. Shows range from wrestling programs to political talk.
Morningside’s radio history goes back to early experiments with Morse code in the 1910s and to KFMR 1150 AM in the 1920s. KMSC began in April 1978, helped by new non-commercial FM rules from the FCC. The call sign KMSC stands for Morningside College.
KMSC has earned recognition, including the 2006 Eric Sevareid Award for first place in student radio play-by-play for a 2005 football game. It has also won Siouxland Choice awards in 2004 and 2006. The station covers local politics and broadcasts appearances by presidential candidates; recent broadcasts have included Dodd, Obama, and McCain. On election nights, about 60 students help with the coverage.
Due to interference from a nearby station on 88.1 FM, KMSC moved to 92.9 FM in 2008. KFHC, on 88.1 FM, received its license around that time, and as a low‑power Class D station, KMSC had to switch frequencies. The FCC granted the new 92.9 license on June 27, 2008. The station is also available to listeners via streaming on its website.
