Julio César Chávez vs. Meldrick Taylor
Thunder Meets Lightning
On March 17, 1990, in Las Vegas, Julio César Chávez and Meldrick Taylor fought for the WBC and IBF light-welterweight titles. The bout, billed Thunder Meets Lightning, matched Chávez’s power with Taylor’s fast hands. Chávez came in undefeated (68–0) and Taylor was 24–0–1, a young Olympic gold medalist.
Taylor started strong, using his speed to build an early lead. Chávez, known for his punching power, gradually wore him down. By the late rounds, Taylor was bleeding and swollen, while Chávez pressed forward.
In the 12th round, with Taylor ahead on the scorecards, Chávez landed a series of hard punches. Taylor fought back but was staggered. Chávez pinned him in a corner and delivered a final right hand that dropped Taylor. Taylor rose but did not respond to the referee’s questions, and the fight was stopped with two seconds left, giving Chávez a controversial knockout win.
The stoppage is still debated, but the victory cemented Chávez as one of the era’s best fighters. Chávez would extend his streak for years, while Taylor, though talented, never fully recovered in the ring. Taylor later won the WBA welterweight title in 1991 and was defeated by Chávez again in 1994. Taylor wrote about the fight in his 2009 book, Two Seconds From Glory.
