Ted Ballard
Edgar Albert Ballard, known as Ted Ballard, was an English footballer who played as a full-back. He was born on 16 June 1920 in Brentford, England, and died on 10 June 2008 in St Leonards-on-Sea, England. During World War II he worked in a munitions factory in Hayes and made one wartime appearance for Brentford.
Ballard turned professional with Leyton Orient in 1946, then moved to Southampton in 1947 in a swap deal for Bill Stroud. He debuted for Southampton on 31 January 1948 against West Ham and went on to make 46 league appearances for the club. In 1952 he returned to Leyton Orient but did not break into the first team. He later played for Snowdown Colliery Welfare and Hastings United, finishing his playing career with Ashford Town (1957–1958), where he made 15 appearances.
After retiring as a player, Ballard managed Ashford Town (1957–1962) and Hastings United (1962–1965), with a caretaker spell at Hastings United in 1967. He was the brother-in-law of former player John Moore. Outside football, he ran the Clarence public house in Hastings and worked as a franchising officer for Green Shield Stamps during the 1970s. Ballard spent his retirement in St Leonards-on-Sea.
