Joyce Wood
Joyce Beryl Wood was an Australian tennis player from Caulfield, Victoria. She teamed up with Alison Burton to dominate in juniors, winning the Australian Championships girls’ doubles three years in a row (1938, 1939 and 1940). Wood also won the girls’ singles at the Australian Championships in those same years.
In the senior competition at the Australian Championships (now called the Australian Open), her best results came between 1938 and 1940. She reached the singles first round in those years and, with Burton, the doubles first round.
In 1943, Joyce Wood married fellow tennis player Max McDermott in Melbourne and the couple moved to Perth, Western Australia. They had a daughter, Kay Suzanne McDermott, in 1945. Wood continued to play and even defended her Perth women’s singles title in April 1946.
