Walid Muaqqat
Walid Ibrahim Muaqqat (Arabic: وليد إبراهيم المؤقت; born 1953) is a Palestinian diplomat who has been the Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Peru since 2015. He previously served as ambassador to Argentina (2009–2015) and to Nicaragua (2006–2009), and he led the Palestine Mission in Peru as Chief Ambassador from 2001 to 2005. He has also worked with Palestinian missions in Bolivia, Ecuador and Uruguay.
Muaqqat was born in Jerusalem during the Jordanian annexation of the West Bank. He studied law at Ain Shams University in Cairo and began his diplomatic career in Peru in 1979 as Second Secretary, later becoming First Secretary in Bolivia (1985) and Counselor in Nicaragua (1987). In 1998 he was appointed Chief Ambassador of the PLO Special Delegation in Peru and helped establish diplomatic relations with Ecuador, serving as concurrent ambassador in Lima.
In 2006 he became ambassador to Nicaragua, then moved to Argentina in 2009 (also accredited to Uruguay). In Argentina, Palestine was officially recognized in 2010, and he helped develop Mercosur-Palestine trade ties and city-to-city cooperation. During the 2014 Gaza war he described Israeli actions as genocide. He left Argentina in February 2015 and was replaced by Husni Abdel Wahed, and in April 2015 he was appointed ambassador to Peru, presenting his credentials on April 23.
As Peru’s Palestinian ambassador, he has spoken about Palestinian rights and highlighted cases such as a Peruvian woman and her family in Gaza. He has received honors from several countries and organizations. He is married to Maha Al Sharif and has four children. In 2022 he apologized after a parking incident in Lima.
